The body has two main fuel tanks during physical exertion, Carbohydrates and Fat. Carbohydrates are the primary source of fuel used in high intensity workouts. High Intensity workouts are traditionally defined by Heart Rate (HR) ranges between 75-100% of your Maximum Heart Rate (Max HR). Fat from the foods we eat, as well as stored body fat is the primary fuel source used in lower intensity workouts, typically defined by HR ranges between 50-70% HR Max.
To become more fit, but also a more efficient fat burner, you must push your heart rate threshold to near max capacity, but also spend time in these lower intensity zones. Training too intensely, too frequently or for too long, can lead to muscle loss (catabolism), metabolic suppression, overtraining and injury. Extensive research has uncovered that the potential benefits of shorter, high intensity workouts are more effective and less detrimental than long steady state training.
StudiO2 group fitness classes are designed to maximize the potential of both these energy systems. In just 30 minutes, you will not only deplete all the glycogen (carbs) from your muscle and liver to promote the body’s use of excess fat as fuel; you will also drastically reduce your potential for injury, over-training and muscle loss.
