In this article, we’ll discuss what metabolic testing is and how to maximize your workout with metabolic testing so you can reach your weight loss goals quickly and efficiently.

What Is Metabolic Testing?dreamstime_xxl_40978661

If you’re among the many Nashville residents who are struggling to lose weight, it’s important to know that you’re not alone. If you’ve been struggling to lose weight while monitoring your caloric intake and exercise regime, metabolic testing could provide you with pertinent information to help you along your weight loss journey. A metabolic test will measure the rate at which your body burns calories during different physical activities, giving you even greater insight on the effectiveness of each workouts.

During a typical metabolic assessment at your health club, a professional trainer will measure your resting metabolic rate (RMR), as well as your normal metabolic rate, throughout various physical activities and intensities. Since almost all of the energy in your body is created through aerobic movement or oxygen utilizing metabolism, the oxygen in your body combines with carbohydrates and fats to make energy in your tissues. When carbohydrates and fats are broken down in your body to make this energy, carbon dioxide is created. Your resting metabolic rate analyzes the amount of oxygen your body uses and the amount of carbon dioxide your body produces through aerobic training. In many cases, these numbers are recorded and used to create a personalized exercise program to improve your overall metabolic profile and to help you shed those extra pounds.

Why Should I Have My Resting Metabolic Rate Tested?

Many of our physical fitness clients ask us why it’s important to have their resting metabolic rate tested. The simple answer to this question is because everyone has a unique metabolic rate and no two people are alike. Recent scientific studies have shown that people with similar attributes such as weight, height, age and body composition can have very different metabolic rates, despite their similarities. This means that if your metabolic rate is lower than average, you might put on a few pounds even while you’re dieting! On the other hand, if your personal metabolic rate is higher than normal, you may not be consuming enough calories to lose weight you want to. Since your resting metabolic rate allows you to see how many calories your body burns while resting, it’ll be easier to maintain a successful weight loss plan.

Will Losing Weight Speed Up My RMR?

As you begin to workout in our customized intensity zones, you may start to lose weight quickly. Many of our fitness clients ask us if losing weight will speed up their resting metabolic rate and are surprised when we tell them it won’t. Your RMR actually tends to decrease as you lose weight, because it takes your body fewer calories to support itself. If you find yourself plateauing and you stop seeing much improvement, consider adding strength training to your workout plan.

Things To Do Before Getting Your RMR Measured

Like many medical tests, there are special guidelines to follow before you have your resting metabolic rate measured.

  • Do not eat for at least four hours prior to the test
  • Do not partake in physical exercise for at least four hours prior to the test
  • Do not consume caffeine for at least three hours prior to the test
  • Avoid taking any type of nutritional supplement or medications that may contain ephedra.
  • Do not consume nicotine for at least one hour before the test
  • Resten to fifteen minutes before the RMR test is administered

Once you’ve completed your metabolic testing, the results might come as a surprise. You may learn that you’ve been working out too hard to achieve the fitness results you want, or that you’re not eating enough calories to reach your weight loss goals. At StudiO2 Performance in Nashville, our advanced metabolic testing process will reveal:

  • How efficiently your body burns fat for energy
  • The maximum level at which you’re still working in your aerobic zone, also known as your aerobic threshold. Your aerobic threshold will be an intensity that you can run at for hours and hours on end.
  • Your VO2 max, or the maximum amount of oxygen you utilize during an intense workout or exercise. This is considered among the best indicators of an athlete’s cardiovascular and aerobic endurance.

Working Out At The Best Intensity

In order to achieve the fitness results you want, it’s important to keep an eye on your personalized intensity zones (which can be calculated after your metabolic test). When you take the time to monitor the frequency, duration and intensity of each of your workouts, you can easily chart your progress to avoid hitting any workout plateaus. While it may be easy to keep tabs on how many times you go to the gym and how long your workouts are, measuring your workout intensity can be difficult to nail down without a metabolic test and a heart rate monitor.

Monitoring your personal heart rate is a great way to gauge your body’s intensity levels during a workout and it’s one of the easiest ways to maximize the time you spend at the gym. During your metabolic test, your VO2 max results will reveal your personal intensity zones, which will highlight the fat burning zones you should workout in for optimal results. This will also help you discover your anaerobic threshold (the point where lactic acid begins to accumulate in your body or the beginning of the “burn”). This valuable piece of information can have a tremendous impact on your fitness regimen and is one of the best ways to ensure you’re working out at the right intensities.
